Although Alaska is not connected to the "Lower 48" by rail, there are three seperate rail trips of interest to Alaska travelers.  The Alaska Railroad in SouthCentral Alaska , the White Pass and Yukon in Southeast Alaska, and the Rocky Mountaineer from Vancouver offering pre and post Alaska trips through the Canadian Rockies.

Alaska Railroad based tours are a wonderful way to tour Southcentral Alaska independently without having to rent a car. I always recommend the train for those going to Denali and/or Seward. On the Alaska Railroad you can go from National Park - Kenai Fjords National Park with its maritime environment - to National Park  - Denali National Park, the North American Serenghetti - through some of the most beautiful scenery on earth. The terminus of the Alaska Railroad is Fairbanks, the jumping off point for Arctic adventuring.

The on-board tour guides are Alaska students specifically trained for the job. They will make sure that you see every sight and hear all the good stories. Starting in 2005 the Alaska Railroad added luxury Gold Star service on the Denali Star - the Anchorage, Talkeetna, Denali, Fairbanks route. This service has proven to be so popular that it is being added to the Coastal Classic route in 2008.

Route Map for the White Pass and Yukon train tours from Skagway Alaska to the Yukon

Billing themselves as the "Scenic Railway of the World", the White Pass and Yukon offers round trips from
Skagway into British Columbia (32 miles) and the Yukon  (58 miles) through arguably some of the most starkly beautiful scenery in the world. The train trip itself is spectacular since the White Pass is a narrow guage railroad. The tracks are only eighteen inches wide. In many places it is mountain one one side, canyon on the other.  Built in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush, this narrow gauge railroad is an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.

All tours have an on-board guide who will narrate the history of the White PassRailroad  and the colorful history of the area. (there is a good reason Dead Horse Gulch is named that.)
Most tours on the White Pass are round trip, though we do offer  bus train combo tours. Some meet the train at turnaround and allow    you the opportunity to view the sights from both sides of the Skagway River Gorge, whille others additionally take you deeper into the Yukon all the way to Emerald Lake and include a meal and in some cases a visit with real sled dogs.

Beginning in 2008  the White Pass will offer service to Carcross with lunch at historic
Lake Bennett. For fans of steam railroads, the White pass offers the Sunday steam engine excursion to Fraser Meadows.

Winner of the prestigious World Travel Award as, “World’s Leading Travel Experience by Train, the Rocky Mountaineer will take you through the vast beauty of Canada’s West and the Canadian Rockies, offering complete luxury, tantalizing cuisine, and  legendary  service.

     Featuring tours, originating in
Vancouver ranging from 5 days to two weeks, Rocky Mountaineer vacations feature a combination of  train and destination tours, accomodations and concierge service. It's a great way to start or end your Alaska vacation.
