Snuggled against the mountains overlooking Gastineau Channel, Juneau's dramatic landscape has inspired some to describe it as the most beautiful capital city in North America. Some of us believe that Juneau, AK has it all: friendly people, and beautiful vistas, in a small town (30,000 people) with many big city amenities. One of the crown jewels of Juneau is the Alaska State Museum, this world class museum contains pricless collections of Native Art and exhibits covering the breadth of Alaska history.

Founded by two prospectors, Richard Harris and Joe Juneau, who were led to gold by Chief Kowee of the Auke Tlingit, Juneau started off as a rough and ready mining town, but soon became the territorial capital. Today Juneau has the distinction of being the only Alaska mining town whose city center was not destroyed by fire. Downtown Juneau (listed on the National Register of Historic Places) has been restored to its turn of the century splendor. As in the old days, the ships dock right downtown, so it's an easy walk to enjoy the area and its multitude of shopping opportunities.

Thirteen miles from the original townsite is Juneau's drive-up glacier. The mighty Mendenhall Glacier is one of the top three visitor attractions in Alaska. It's a mile wide finger of ice protruding thirteen miles from the Juneau Icefield. The 1200 square mile icefield--about the size of the state of Rhode Island--is a popular destination for flightseeing trips.

Juneau offers a wide variety of tour options.  Juneau is a prime location for whale watching.

In addition to tours to the glacier, flightseeing over the icefield or even landing and walking on the glacier, Juneau is the gateway to day tours to
Glacier Bay National Park and Tracy Arm.
