Haines, AK is synonymous with Eagles. While in much
of the continental United States our national symbol --the Bald Eagle -- is rarely,
if ever, seen, in Haines the Bald Eagle is almost as common as the spruce
trees that characterize this area. Blessed with an almost endless supply of salmon,
the Chilkat Valley, which has been designated the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, is home to hundreds of easily viewed Bald Eagles. The Chilkat Valley can be experienced
via van tour, river float or air boat tours. |

Although Haines is a very small town, a number of nationally recognized
artists make their home here. Hence downtown Haines has several delightful
art galleries that are really worth exploring. One unique thing you can do in Haines is take an art lesson from International known
artist Tresham Gregg, who is also the artistic director of the New Chilkat Dancers Storytelling Theater which regularly performs highly artistic interpetations of Tlingit stories. Haines does not begin to get the level of traffic that it's neighbor Skagway does. So if you would like to get away from the crowds, do a little independent exploring, visit a town that's authentically Alaskan. Haines is a good choice. A short ferry ride connects Haines and Skagway, therefore if you are on a cruise that stops in Skagway, you can still access any Haines Tour. |
Chilkat blankets, woven and displayed for ceremonial purposes. It was the wealth
from trading that allowed the Chilkats the leisure time to develop their exquisite
artistic skills. Recently the elders have allowed some of the clan houses
to be opened so visitors can view these priceless treasures. |

Twenty-one miles up the road from Haines is the native village
of Klukwan, home of the Chilkat Tlingits. The Chilkats were famous for two
things: their prowess as traders (they controlled the "grease trail, which controlled
trade between the Interior Alaskan and Canadian tribes and all the coastal
people) and the beautiful, intricate |
Back in Haines be sure and visit the American Bald
Eagle Foundation displays. The Foundation Director, Dave Olerud is a master presenter
and highly knowledable about all of the animals and eco-systems
