For planning or remembering your Alaska trip |
This route serves two different sets of travelers. If you are traveling via a cruise ship that docks in Whittier, (Princess, Carnival and Radisson/Regent Cruise lines) the Alaska Railroad's Glacier Discovery service is an elegant, scenic, convenient and informative way to travel to or from your cruise ship to Anchorage. If you are looking for a day trip to go fishing or to experience glaciers and the beauty of the Chugach National Forest this train is also for you. After traveling through Anchorage the Glacier Discovery descends through the Anchorage Coastal Wildlife Refuge, commonly called Potter's Marsh. This is a good place to spot migratory birds, water fowl and moose. Your trip continues along the Turnagain Arm, a body of water featuring the world's second highest tides at over 30 feet. Beluga whales can often be seen following salmon on the incoming tide, and Dall sheep frequent rocky mountain sides. After passing Girdwood and Portage Glacier you will travel through a two mile tunnel before reaching Whittier. Here cruise ship passengers, fishers and those who are taking a mini-cruise to view glaciers hop off. Other passengers continue on to Spencer Glacier (where you can take a raft trip in the lake formed by Spencer Glacier.) Or you can choose to continue on the train deeper into the Chugach Mountains to the aptly named Grandview, past Bartlett Glacier, which comes to within 800 feet of the railroad track and Trail glacier. On the return trip Anchorage passengers exit the train at Portage and are motor coached to Anchorage. The Glacier Discovery then proceeds to Whittier, providing Anchorage bound service to cruise ship passengers and others who have been visiting Whittier. because the train leaves Whittier at 6:45PM it provides an excellent opportunity for cruise ship passengers to add excursions in Whittier to their itinerary. (the buses all leave much earlier) |
